Visions of Empire: The Quest for a Railroad Across America, 1840-1880

The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens

Apr 21—Jul 23, 2012

The exhibition marks the 150th anniversary of the 1862 Pacific Railroad Act, which led to the rail connection between the Pacific Ocean and the rest of the continent.

Drawing on the Huntington’s enormous archives on the topic, the exhibition illuminates the sweeping economic, social and cultural changes that took place throughout the West after completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869.

The exhibition features some 200 items, including maps, illustrations, photographs, letters, diaries, ledgers, newspapers and magazines, most of them publicly displayed for the first time. A whole wall in a separate room contains more than 300 stereograms of the project from the Huntington’s collection.
