Sculpture in Motion: Masterpieces of Italian Design

Petersen Automotive Museum

Feb 25, 2012—Feb 3, 2013

This exhibition explores the history of Italian automotive design from early small-scale coachbuilders to modern major design houses with international reputation.

Concentrated around northern Italy’s industrial cities of Turin, Milan and Modena, these automotive body makers (carrozzerie) have influenced the look of automobiles for decades and created some of the world’s most exotic and memorable designs. Responding to Italian car buyers’ preference for a coachbuilt custom body, they ranged in size from small shops to fully-integrated houses that managed the design for major manufacturers.

Among the star exhibits on display are: the 1966 Lamborghini Miura, the 1970 Lancia Stratos HF Zero by Bertone, the 1953 Cadillac Series 62 Coupe by Ghia, and the 1947 Cisitalia 202 Coupe by Pinin Farina.
