Roger Medearis: His Regionalism

Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens

Jun 16—Sep 17, 2012

Roger Medearis studied under the noted Regionalist painter Thomas Hart Benton and later developed his own distinctive style, painting slowly and using short, meticulous brush strokes. Throughout his long career Medearis remained dedicated to Regionalism, a popular artistic movement during the 1930s and 1940s.

Comprising some 30 works in various media, including paintings in tempera and acrylic, drawings, lithographs and sculpture, the exhibition includes works from the Huntington’s own collection (given by the artist’s widow, Betty Medearis), as well as those on loan from private collections and a painting from the Smithsonian Art Museum.
