Ends of the Earth: Land Art to 1974

Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA)

May 27—Sep 3, 2012

Organized by former MOCA Senior Curator Philipp Kaiser and co-curator Miwon Kwon, professor of art history at UCLA, this is the first large-scale exhibition to focus on land art. It begins with the 1960s, when artists started experimenting with the earth as a medium, and concludes with 1974, before land art became fully institutionalized.

Curators faced challenges such as how to bring monumental artworks from the actual landscape into a museum setting and what to exhibit besides photographs, videos, sketches and models. Presenting 250 works by more than 80 international artists at the Geffen Contemporary warehouse, the exhibition disperses some myths about land art, including the idea that it is exclusively an American movement.
