California’s Designing Women, 1896-1986

Autry National Center

Aug 10, 2012 — Jan 6, 2013

The exhibition celebrates the work of 46 California women who designed utilitarian products and whose work was often unacknowledged and sometimes even uncredited. The show was organized by guest curator Bill Stern, who selected women whose designs incorporated the newest styles, materials and technologies of their time.

Featuring more than 240 works including ceramics, clothing, furniture, graphics, jewelry, lighting and textiles, the show demonstrates California’s unique contribution to American commercial design. Many of the works are being exhibited for the first time.
